BREAKING NEWS: BROOKLINE SUPERINTENDENT WARNS OF POSSIBLE EDUCATOR STRIKE
Communication from Superintendent Linus Guillory Startles Parents
Public Schools of Brookline Superintendent Linus Guillory has posted a letter warning community members of a possible strike by Brookline Educators this Friday, May 13:
The message reads:
I am reaching out to parents, caregivers and staff to share important information with our entire community.
I have become aware of a possible strike by some employees represented by the BEU on Friday, May 13th. Strikes by public employees, including educators, are illegal in Massachusetts, and more importantly, these types of actions disrupt, interrupt and harm the one purpose that we are all called to do: educate children. However, if a strike does occur, depending upon the number of educators who engage in the strike, it has the potential to disrupt school on Friday, May 13th.
Should the BEU decide to take no actions that impact the school day, then Friday, May 13th will proceed as a regularly scheduled school day for all students and educators. If the BEU votes to proceed with actions that would impede our scheduled school day, the district will take all prudent actions to deliver education to our students. While our goal and priority is always to have schools open for students, I recognize your need for advance notice of potential interruptions. Without a sufficient number of employees present on May 13th, it would be difficult to safely operate our schools.
While this juncture in negotiations is challenging and frustrating for all, please know we are continuing discussions to settle the contracts. The negotiations subcommittee and the BEU team have scheduled two additional evening mediation sessions: Saturday, May 14th and Monday, May 16th.
I will notify our community with any updates as they develop.
Sincerely,
Dr. Linus Guillory
Superintendent of Schools
